Day 4: SEA

Day four has come and gone and I can tell that my writing is already becoming sucky. We have been so active that I am too tired to do anything but sleep and lounge around when we get home.

This morning was an early start- 7am- before we piled in the car for an hour and a half drive to nearby Siracusa to visit the beach. Like most beaches in Sicily, the beach was a mixture of volcanic rock and sand. Huge rocks lined the sides before emptying out into a clear, blue sea.

We met up with a bunch of Federico's school friends and family to spend the day together. All the conversations were in Italian so I frequently didn't understand anything.

(SPEEDOS. LOTS OF THEM)

Sofia didn't seem to care that I don't understand Italian so we built sandcastles and swam together while the boys jumped off the cliffs into the water.

Quinn too made a friend: Davide's father "Big Mario". Typical Italian name right? Mario has promised to haunt Quinn in his dreams and follow him wherever he goes.

Mario is one of the only people who can speak English so we talked for a little bit but mostly laughed about Quinn.

We didn't get home until 6pm and Giancarlo, Mariella, and Federico went to church. Mattia, Quinn, Sofia, and I made bracelets and played poker in their absence.

When they came home, we had dinner with Giancarlo's mother and a couple of other relatives. The dinner was pasta and chicken nuggets. Half American and half Italian.

Everyone kind of passed out after that and I had a nice Skype with Natalie and McKayla.

Wooooooowwwww. Sorry for the crappy quality of this entry but I am past exhausted and can't think of anything else to say.

  1. WHOA, DOS SPEEDOS. DANG. That beach sand looks so different from American sand, it looks cakey and squishy, not... sandy? And they had cliff-diving?? Okay, when we go to Europe, that is going to be on our checklist of things to do. If you don't want to do it, you can record me. I've always wanted to do that. And Sofia is adorable! I bet she and Ava would be best friends. It was surprising how much Ava could communicate with other children in Slovakia! She became best buds with our cousin Jakub, even though he didn't speak a word of English and she couldn't understand a single thing in Slovak. They had their own language- it was crazy. Anyways, sweet dreams, my dear! -Natalie
