Day 20: Sea House

Date: 6-9-13

Today was a pretty full day. I awoke up at 8 (I set my alarm for some reason) but snoozed in bed until 9 because none of the other children were up. Upon waking up, I finished packing my bag for the sea and had a nutritious breakfast of chocolate cereal. The bags were magically packed in the small car (Mariella drove that one) and all the kids climbed into the van. On our way out, we stopped to pick up Federico's friend Emanuele before driving about an hour to Brucoli where the house is.

It was hot when we got here. Like really hot. We dumped our stuff in our rooms and immediately changed into our swim suits. It takes about 2 minutes to walk to the sea so we did that. It was a gorgeous day for the beach even though the sun was really strong.

Some nifty palm tree umbrellas were set up for public use so I laid out under those when I got tired of swimming.

We came back to the house for lunch and then played around while Giancarlo, Mariella, and Sofia drove back into town to get additional supplies and the dogs. Basketball is a favorite sport of the boys to play so they created a homemade hoop. Emanuele is really dark skinned and skilled at basketball so his nickname is Mr. Black.

About halfway through the game, Mattia ripped his pants straight down the middle and refused to get a new pair. He basically played the last half in his underwear- more than I wanted to see.

When they tired from basketball, we traipsed back to the sea and went for another swim. By now it was later in the day and cloudy. The water was absolutely freezing. We didn't last for very long in the water and scurried back home to warm up.

We played another game of basketball (I actually played this time) and Emanuele and I won against Quinn and Federico 14-4. When Mattia joined us again, the boys went off to play a game called "shoulders". It involves bouncing a ball back and forth and trying to score goals without touching the ball with their hands. It's like soccer but with no running and a lot more rules.

At sunset, Federico and I took a stroll back to the beach and talked for a bit. When we returned home, Giancarlo and Mariella had returned and dinner was almost ready. For dinner we had the Italian version of hotdogs. It involves a hotdog on this delicious bread called morbidone topped with onions cooked in vinegar, ketchup, French fries, cheese, and other toppings if you wish. It was scrumptious.

The house up the hill enjoys playing music really loudly- like, you can hear it from the beach, loud- and last night appeared to be karaoke night. I swear at least ten people died up there tonight or so it sounded like it from the way their voices screamed like they were being slaughtered. It was really bad. We had fun imitating them. I lost my voice a day or two ago but I still sounded better than they did.

When we finished our meal, the mosquitos had gotten really bad but we stayed outside anyways because the house is too small for eight people. We played cards and talked about random things until about 1am. Emanuele showed us a magic trick with cards and I swear that I will learn it before he leaves.

After a small toilet paper fiasco with the toilet (it's difficult being the only girl sharing a bathroom with four guys), I went to bed. Quinn was already asleep.

Although it's a small house with not a lot of privacy, I really love it. I can tell that our time here is going to be special.
