Day 22: Allergy Attack?

Date: 6-11-13

Having one to bed at 2am I did not expect to wake up at 7am with my legs on fire. My brain was foggy and could not comprehend why the entirety of my legs itched to the point of hurting. My mind immediately jumped to the fact that I was having an allergic reaction to the pizza I ate last night but that would be ridiculous as it had been almost ten hours since I had eaten it. Luckily I was mostly still asleep so I convinced myself it was just mosquito bites and went back to sleep.

I awoke at ten to see that my legs were puffy and red and itched like nobodies business. I couldn't find one bite as everything was swollen so I just scratched and scratched and scratched. By then it had spread to my bottom as well so that was very uncomfortable. Giancarlo observed it and declared that it was indeed an allergic reaction either to the sea or to a bug that bit me in the middle of the night. Mattia's legs do the same every year after the first swim of the season. However, this wasn't the first swim I've had here so I have no idea what happened. My body is messed up.

It turns out that Emanuele's mother is the doctor I visited so they called her and they told me to take pills for allergies. It made me very drowsy so I snoozed under the palm tree while the boys swam. I had woken up again by lunch time (I had a can of coke) and we had a delicious meal with coconut gelato for dessert. I showered after we ate and then played a bit of basketball with the boys. Emanuele and I won again. Luckily Mattia's shorts did not rip this time. We even got a real hoop from somewhere and were able to tie it to a pole.

Hot after the game, the boys decided to take another swim. Wary of the water, I opted to stay on shore and listen to music and watch. The boys hijacked a surf board and had fun paddling around the one insistent snorkeler.

There was a bunch of rude guys on the beach attempting to speak in English. I didn't understand what they were saying but Federico refused to translate and instead ushered us back to the house.

Federico's cousins (the same from 4th of July) were playing in the street and we chatted with them awhile before playing another game of basketball. America won.

It was soon dinner and we had a really Italian meal of meat, cheese, bread, and olives, the air permeated with the smell of fried bugs as we had gotten an electric bug killer. Truly delicious.

We played cards again- Uno is the drug of choice- before Federico announced that we were welcome to join him at his cousins house for some free wifi. That went over really well so we climbed a couple of hills and enjoyed a nice snack and uno game with his family while on our phones.

All too soon it was time to leave and we headed back in the pitch black night to get home. Federico, Mattia, Emanuele, and Quinn formed a protective circle around Sofia and I which I was particularly thankful of when we passed a group of shady motorcyclists just sitting on the side of the road.

Although it was almost midnight when we got home, nobody wanted to go to bed so we stayed up playing Uno. Federico crashed at about 1:30am but the rest of us stayed up until 3 attempting to learn Emanuele's magic trick. Exhausted, we finally called it a night and went to bed.

Here are some pictures of the sea house for those interested:

  1. That's scary! I'm glad it wasn't a serious reaction. And at first I thought you said there were a lot of "nude" guys on the beach... I was like WHOA GURL, WHOA. But then I realized. Hah. What a cute house!! The stones and path outside are so pretty. Me and my family are going to the beach in a few days too- I shall stare majestically out at the coast and think of you. -Natalie
