Day 13: Croissants, Nutella, and breakfast oh my!

Has it really been almost two weeks since I left? It feels like a much shorter time span has elapsed. On one hand, this is my home. I look forward to driving on the impossibly narrow streets to get here and every single time we pull up to the house I feel relaxed. On the other, I can feel the clock ticking for when we leave and when I get worried about time it's because I know we don't have much left.

I would like to take a moment to say that on day 11(Sunday) I skyped with Kayley, Marra, Morgan, and Zaneta. They asked that I mentioned them so that when I look back on these blogs they are here. Love you guys.

Today was a pretty chill day. I was the first one in the family up. Why? I don't know. I flopped on the couch and obsessively checked Morgan and Mom's Facebook pages for birthday messages.

Once everyone was up, the family (minus Mariella- she has a gluten allergy) shuffled into the car and drove into town to a small bakery. I knew what we were going to get before we got it but it didn't stop me from being amazed at the size of our breakfast.

A giant Nutella filled croissant. It was large enough to feed six people. I was the only one who couldn't finish my portion.

Every bite brought forth a gushing avalanche of Nutella to combat the small amount of dough of the croissant. It was impossible to eat. I had Nutella smeared all over my hands and face, stuck in my teeth, and powder on my legs. If you think eating peanut butter is hard, try it with straight Nutella. It was heavenly of course, but better in small portions.

The baker let us wash up in his bathroom and then we headed home. Damiano came over again and I "slept" (more like closed my eyes) awhile.

At about 3, I skyped with mom a little bit and wished her a happy birthday and talked about life. The connection wasn't very good so it was a short conversation.

In the evening we went to the park. Mattia and Damiano went their separate ways while Federico, Quinn, and I made some friends of our own. I also watched an adorable father/son pair play soccer. When the market opened, we visited it before going back to the park and hanging around. Etna was particularly beautiful.

We came home and had dinner (grilled cheese!) before the boys played soccer and I had a nice, long shower. When I got out, Quinn went to bed so the boys and I played a game of Uno. They kept cheating by helping each other win. They talked in italian or texted so I raged quit while they cheered about beating me. I think they are jealous of my card skills.

I tried to Skype with Mom again but it wasn't working so I went to bed.

  1. Kira, you need to practice your uno skills more... Hahha I bet you would totally win in UNO attack, though!

  2. Oh my gosh... I thought that nutella thing was a raw turkey or chicken at first... At first I was like eurghhhhh but now... mmmmmmm! And really, some of the best parts of traveling are just sitting and watching and just... having a feel, ya know? I can't really explain it, but there it is. Did I tell you about how in Eat Pray Love Elizabeth Gilbert thought up names for each city she visited with one word? Like, her word for Rome was 'sex'? It was based on her experiences in every place she visited. Have you thought of a word for Sicily? Love you! -Nat

  3. I was thinking the same thing that Natalie was thinking. Breanna introduced me to Nutella last year. Yummy stuff.
